In 2021, UC and Springer Nature will carry out an open scientific pilot project as part of Nature`s subscription journals. Details of the pilot project will be developed in the fall of 2020. The agreement also requires UC and Springer Nature to develop a more comprehensive open access agreement for these prestigious magazines, which is expected to be available in 2022. UC`s subscription fee for Nature magazines will be kept flat in 2021, while open access conditions are under development.
The MPDL agreement is „a good step, but we see a need for further progress,“ said Jeff MacKie-Mason, an economist and university librarian at UC Berkeley, co-chair of the UC publishers` negotiating team. „We understand that the production model is more expensive for nature, but the scientific publishing industry needs to change the way it chooses and publishes the most prestigious articles in order to be sustainable for authors and their institutions.“ Articles containing authors, based in Dutch universities and university medicine centres, are now published in the journals Taylor -Francis and Routledge Open Select (hybrid). The publication aspects of the agreement will be implemented in three phases. The agreement contains the titles and timetable for access to reading and assistance to open publication: Correspondent authors of institutions participating in the Bibsam consortium can now publish Open Access in Taylor – Francis Open Select (Hybrid) magazines without having to pay an APC.
